ENGLISH GRAMMAR, COMPOSITION AND LITERATURE
English Language Proficiency Course (60 Hours)


I. OBJECTIVES
 

The course is designed for students following English language for their basic needs of comprehension and communication. ELPC is a four-year long course of study for undergraduates. It focuses on acquiring listening, speaking, writing and reading skills through classroom teaching, situational learning and research. At the end of this course, students are expected to achieve the following goals:

  1. Be able to understand, infer and effectively express themselves in English.
  2. Be able to use the language for personal, official, business and public purposes.
  3. Be able to use the language with diction and style
  4. Be able to appreciate, analyze and evaluate English literature against the Islamic concepts.
II. CLASS CONTENT
First Year
A. Reading Comprehension
  Extracting facts and figures from English writing.
B. Writing Skills
  1. Compressing and summarizing information, short writings
2. Informal letters and reports
C. Basics of Grammar
  1. Tenses and Verb forms
2. Voices
3. Reported Speech

III. TEXTBOOKS
A. Required Text:
  New Interchange Book 1, (student’s book + workbook) by Jack C. Richards
B. Supplementary Texts:
  English Grammar in Use Intermediate level by Raymond Murphy
II. CLASS CONTENT
Second Year
A. Reading Comprehension
  Extracting facts and figures from English writing.
B. Writing Skills
  Formal letters and articles (basics of organized writing)
C. Basics of Grammar
  1. Reported Speech
2. clauses
3. transformation of sentence patterns
D. Literature
  Six short stories of Muslim writers – original or translation

III. TEXTBOOKS
A. Required Text:
  New Interchange Book 2 (student’s book + workbook) by Jack C. Richards
B. Supplementary Texts:
  English Grammar in Use Intermediate level (Second Edition without key) by Raymond Murphy (Cambridge Uni. Press)

Third Year

  Extracting facts and figures from English writing.
B. Writing Skills
  Informative and descriptive writing
C. Basics of Grammar
  Editing and error analysis
D. Literature
  A novel / travelogue such as Road to Mecca by M. Asad.

  Essentials of English, by Gale Hopper

Fourth Year

  1. Narrative, 2. Argumentative, 3. Persuasive, and 4. Research paper
B. Literature
  Six essays and a play
